How St. Mary by the Sea Parish in Oregon Became involved with St. Aloysius School...
Our connection with the Daughters of Mary sisters and Sr. Immaculate started almost 20 years ago when Fr Jack Morris invited two sisters, who were earning degrees from Seattle University, WA to come to visit and have a retreat at our small parish, St Mary by the Sea, in Rockaway Beach, OR. At that time we were all so impressed with these delightful sisters, a bond was forged and they continued to visit our parish many times during their school breaks over the next five years before returning back to a Uganda.
A few years later one of the sisters, Sr. Immaculate returned to Seattle for a short trip and during that time she came back to visit us at our parish. We had a new priest by then, Fr. Larry Gooley, who was so impressed with Sister Immaculate, he invited her to speak at all our parish masses telling us how the Daughters of Mary sisters in Uganda serve their people and especially work to improve the lives of women and girls. Sister Immaculate, now in her mid 30’s, had become the Head Mistress of St Aloysius Secondary School for Girls and had a huge responsibility. This is a boarding school which educates, and provides for 350, mostly poor girls and some orphans from rural Uganda.
After hearing sister’s story of how she struggled to care for, educate, and keep these girls safe, we took up a collection to help. A couple months later a few of us formed a steering committee and started our Uganda Girls Project. We found that many of our parish family wanted to help with different kinds of fundraising and be involved in improving the lives of these young women in Uganda on a consistent basis.
For six years now we have continued to raise money for scholarships and for other school improvements. Last year three of us went to Uganda and spent 10 days at St. Aloysius. We have seen that our money continues to make a huge difference in providing many partial scholarships, a few full scholarships, as well as improve the living conditions for the St Aloysius students.
Our money to them is wired free into their school account in Uganda so that 100% of all donated money goes directly to help support St. Aloysius. We are a very small parish, but in 6 years we have raised over $120,000 to help Sr. Immaculate educate these delightful young women who will help to improve their country. Thank you for any help you can provide for St. Aloysius.
